Net worth

Your real number. Everything you own minus everything you owe, on one line, today.

Make it your own

Start with an example, then change any value. Enter 0 for none; a blank field cannot be calculated. All money amounts are NZD.

Your entries stay in this calculator. They are not saved or sent anywhere.

Your estimate

Estimated net worth today

$355,000.00

The value of your listed assets less your listed debts. This is not the same as accessible cash.

Total assets
$915,000.00
Total liabilities
$560,000.00
What this estimate assumes
  • Use current estimated values and outstanding balances for one person or household, including only your ownership share.
  • Property values are entered before subtracting mortgages. Include each asset and liability only once.
  • This is a snapshot, not a forecast or a measure of cash available. Tax, selling costs and access restrictions are not deducted. Negative net worth is shown in full.

How to read this tool, in plain English

For information only, not financial advice. These simplified estimates do not consider your full circumstances. Assumed rates are not forecasts or guaranteed returns. Talk to a financial adviser before making financial decisions.

HOW TO READ THIS TOOL

Everything you own, minus everything you owe.

One line

Assets less liabilities, on the day you enter them. Negative net worth is shown in full, not hidden.

Your share only

Enter your share of jointly owned property, accounts and debts so the number is yours, not the household’s.

A baseline to revisit

The value is in tracking it over time. Note today’s figure and come back in a year.

How the model works

Four asset lines and two debt lines are added and subtracted at current values. Property is entered at its full estimated value and the mortgage is deducted separately. Each item should appear once.

What it leaves out

Tax, selling costs, break fees and the fact that some assets cannot be sold quickly are not deducted. Net worth is not the same as money you could access this month. KiwiSaver counts as an asset, but it is generally locked until retirement or a first home.

A FEW GOOD QUESTIONS

Before you
trust the number.

An estimate is only as good as the question behind it. These are the ones people ask most about this tool.

All ten tools
What value should I use for my house?

A recent valuation, a council rating value or a realistic sale estimate, at the full price before the mortgage. The mortgage goes in as a liability. Be conservative. A flattering estimate only flatters the number.

Do I include my car and furniture?

You can, under other assets, at what they would sell for today rather than what they cost. Many people leave them out because they lose value and are rarely sold. Whatever you choose, be consistent from one year to the next.

Is negative net worth a problem?

Not always. It is common early in a mortgage or after study. What matters is the direction. If debt is falling and assets are rising, the number will follow.
